Oh I am dreading religion type questions. I am an athiest and my husband is a Lutheran, so I have no idea how we'll handle this type of questioning. Tougher than "where do babies come from?" I think !

Maria Shriver has a book by this title. It's written for children. Someone gave it to me for my daughters when my mom died. They were 8 and 6. The book had some good parts, but kind of long for a topic that was so sensitive (the girls were very close to my mom). It's worth a look.

I was at a loss for words when my daughter (who was 2 at the time) asked, "What's prayer?" Both myself and her dad are atheists, but we both understand that faith is important to many people and want her to respect it. The question was in the context of me shushing her when she was being noisy during a prayer at a wedding.

My answer was, "It's when people talk about God and the Bible. You don't know what those things are, but you'll learn. For now, just know that they're also concentrating very hard on peace and love, and we have to be quiet to help them concentrate."

She has also asked, "How are persons made?" O.o I told her that they're not made, they're born. Her answer was this: "Maybe they could make persons in factories. That would be better."

Jenn: That sounds like a great answer ! I think we get caught up in giving a full and complete answer to young children, who are often satisfied by shorter answers.
